Finding Balance in the Workplace

Work smarter, not harder. 

 

Many people, struggle with the work demands being placed upon them. It happens in every industry, but it’s even more profound in the healthcare sector, and can trigger emotional stress and career burnout. It’s not uncommon to want to excel at your job, and even go above and beyond what is expected of you. It’s human nature to push for success. Some, gain a sense of self based upon their chosen professions, myself included. On any given day, I feel satisfaction from being an integral part of a client’s journey. It’s an incredible feeling knowing you’ve found your purpose and it’s understandable to take pride in a job well done. Your attitude and self-esteem can improve greatly when helping others. And yet, if not mindful of what you need to function effectively at your highest level, both personally and professionally, and find yourself overcompensating in one area of your life, the impact on your physical, emotional, and spiritual health can be significant. High expectations, with little support or encouragement to practice self-care throughout the day, can chip away at your productivity, attitude and overall job performance. You begin to feel resentful and dread going to work. Eventually, you’re putting in minimal effort, engaging in conflict and participating in drama and workplace gossip; the stress becoming too much to bear. 

 

Does any of this sound familiar? 

 

If I had a nickel for every time I heard, “helping others is a selfless act” or “don’t be selfish,” I’d be rich. There’s this innate desire to be of service, and yet our society holds a dangerous misconception that to be selfless, one must give all of their energy, at the expense of their wellbeing. I believe we live in a time where there is too much emphasis placed on productivity, creating this desire for constant achievement, which is contributing to a steady increase in cases of compassion fatigue and career burnout. 

 

Over the past 10 years, I have witnessed countless co-workers, friends and mentors fall victim to this mentality. Hardworking, strong, capable individuals who cracked under extreme pressure. What’s been so troubling about these situations, is that they could’ve been avoided. If only companies embraced a slower-paced work environment and/or supported employees need for self-care. There’s this saying that I have always loved and try my best to live by, “you have to put on your oxygen mask first before you can help others." This should be a universal mantra as it promotes a healthy work-life balance; a practice that is severely lacking in today’s workplace.  

 

I have designed a 2-week coaching support program to help you find balance in your professional life. The goal is to learn how to identify when you’re feeling overworked, create tangible and realistic self-care practices, negotiate deadlines and expectations with confidence, adopt new habits, advocate for your personal needs and set healthy boundaries. The program consists of 2-one-hour sessions (either in person or via Skype), writing assignments, accountability check ins and emotional support.
